Your Questions About How To Work On Brakes

Michael Your Questions About How To Work On Brakes

Michael asks…

My friend has got to sreeching level on his brakes, he has gone for repairs, but the hand brakes works so well?

How does this occur?

latitude answers:

The hand or parking brake usually operate the rear brake in some way or another. The front brakes do 65-75% of normal braking, therefore you can wear the front brakes and not wear the rear, or in his case wear the front and not wear the parking brake.

Ken Your Questions About How To Work On Brakes

Ken asks…

How do I get the brake lights and the hazard light on my 2000 Escalade to work?

The upper brake light works..
The brake switch on the pedal is new.
The hazzard light switch does not work
bulbs and fuses are good.
hazard light switch is jammed
traffic indicator works
parking lights work

latitude answers:

You need more details.

If its the lights its self and not the switch, the bulbs might be out. Or your fuses might of broke.

The hazard “switch” isnt working, i dont understand. Is like the button or switch broken off? Or it is jammed? If its jammed you might want to take your steering column or dash (wherever your switch is) apart and you might need to saughter the leads back together. Or check your grounds.

So if you arent experienced with cars. Uhmm. Take it in.

Sandy Your Questions About How To Work On Brakes

Sandy asks…

I want to fix the breaks of the cars at my job. But I heard you need a permit to do this..Any one have more detail please.

latitude answers:

Check with your local County Court House, they should be able to tell you where you can get one, if you really do need one to work on automobiles.

I am not aware of any locality requiring permits to work on automobiles.

Your Questions About Brakes Repair Drums

David Your Questions About Brakes Repair Drums

David asks…

How do you pull off the rear break drum on a 2010 Toyota Corolla?

I’ve attempted repairing the brake pads on my 2010 Toyota Corolla and the from pads were real simple. I thought since it is a 2010 it would be just as simple in the rear but they look totally different. I’m not sure if the rear brakes are drum or disc. They look like drums. My problem is that I don’t know how to remove whatever is there behind the tire to access the brake pads. Can someone help please?

latitude answers:

There is a slot in the backing plate which has a rubber plug in it. After you remove the plug use a brake adjusting tool to loosen the brake shoes so that the lip which has formed on the drum will slide over the compressed shoes. The brake tool engages the points in the star wheel.

Carol Your Questions About Brakes Repair Drums

Carol asks…

Brake Repair Please Help!?

I have a 2003 Pontiac Aztek. My brake pads needed to be changed so I took my car to Wearmasters. This particular location was referred to me by a friend.

I had a rotor replaced on the driver’s side, brake fluid changed and the front brake pads were replaced. A couple days after the service was performed, my brakes began making noises similar to creeking as if you were walking on an old wooden floor.

I went back to Wearmasters and was told my rear drums needed to be sanded and that is the only noise they had heard. I was not charged this time but again, everytime I applied the brake this creeking noise would take place. It is also quite loud….as I brake, people stare.

I just want this fixed properly. Can anyone recommend a service location that can actually repair this problem successfully? I live in Michigan. Anyone have experiences with Belle Tire or Tuffy? The reason why I am asking of these service centers is because they are open much later. Thanks in advance!

latitude answers:

As much as I hate to tell you to do this, you should go back where they worked on it until they get it right! If it didn’t make this noise until they worked on it then something is wrong and they are your best hope of getting it fixed without having to pay any more, I see this all the time, customers come to us after they have had work done by someone less qualified, and we have to charge them to fix someone else’s mistakes, this gives everyone bad feelings…if they screwed it up make them fix it right, then dont go back there anymore!

Susan Your Questions About Brakes Repair Drums

Susan asks…

Which of these is most important to get fixed now?

I have a 2003 Ford Focus that is in need of repair, but I don’t have the money to make all of the repairs now. What needs to be done:
- rear brakes- drums are completely rusted on
- fix exhaust leak
- replace swaybar links
- replace struts

In what order would you get these issues fixed? Thanks.

latitude answers:

Brakes
exhaust
struts
swaybar links

Lizzie Your Questions About Brakes Repair Drums

Lizzie asks…

Do four wheel disc brakes wear better than front disc and rear drum?

Is a complete brake job more expensive generally for a four wheel disc brake repair/replace job?

latitude answers:

I have disc all round an rears wear quicker, cost is about same. But the bonus is pads are easier to replace than drum.

James Your Questions About Brakes Repair Drums

James asks…

Rear brakes question on a 2003 Mercury Sable?

A mechanic just looked at my wife’s car and announced that the rear brakes were shot, fluid was leaking into the brakes, and that the following would need to be replaced (exactly as he noted them):

Wheel Cylinders
Brake Drums
Rear Shoes
Brake Hardware

Drums and shoes I understand, but what precisely are the cylinders and the “hardware”? Are these components I can replace myself? I am an engineer and have done some small amount of work on cars in the past… just never on brakes. Will the computer need to be reprogrammed for any reason after the repair?

If I do not do it myself, is the quoted price of ~$430 + tax (southern IL) appropriate?
Also: What tools are required for this repair?

latitude answers:

Wheel cylinders are what the brake fluid flows into to apply the shoes to the drum. The leaking is from bad seals in the cylinders themselves, and has most likely contaminated the brake shoes and hardware which is why the mechanic told you all that needed to be replaced. And, yes these are all components you can replace yourself, although you will need a couple of special tools for the hardware. These parts are usually inexpensive. The wheel cylinder is usually around 20-30 bucks and the hardware is around 10-20 bucks…more or less. And no, you do not have to mess with the computer, unless your ABS light is on.

Your Questions About Car Brake Pads

Daniel Your Questions About Car Brake Pads

Daniel asks…

What makes the brake pads of a car last longer?

What makes the brakes pads of a car last longer, pressing on the brakes slowly at a longer distance of a stop sign or pressing the brakes harder at a shorter distance from a stop sign?

latitude answers:

Don’t use the brakes when not needed… I use my brakes when needed and get 3 to 4 times more miles out of them than other people. But I also understand why some don’t last.. Follow them and their brake lights are on more than off.

Mark Your Questions About Car Brake Pads

Mark asks…

Why do i need to replace my rear brake pads? My car is only 2 years old?

I bought a new 2008 honda accord about 2 years ago and i have to get my rear brake pads replaced? should it happen this early? will i be covered by a factory warranty or anything?

latitude answers:

It’s your driving! NO that isn’t covered! You can slow down by taking your foot off the gas and anticipating traffic instead of waiting til the last minute and crunching down on your brakes all the time! They will last longer if you drive properly!

Carol Your Questions About Car Brake Pads

Carol asks…

Is asbestos still used in car brake pads?

latitude answers:

Asbestos has been banned from use in brake linings. Right? Wrong.

Asbestos is still used in some brake and clutch linings and in some other products.

Recent newspaper articles, along with trade publications, have brought national attention back to asbestos and its potential health and safety issues.

Thomas Your Questions About Car Brake Pads

Thomas asks…

What’s that sharp noise when I push the brakes of my car when the brake pads are new?

I just changed all four brake pads in my 2000 impala a week ago, but at times when I brake, I hear a high pitched noise as you would normally hear when you are running out of brake pads. But I just recently changed it, what could it be?

latitude answers:

You may have a cat stuck in your fan belt….
Just kidding.
It may just be the new pads breaking in or you may have some dust build-up. Try cleaning the rotors and pads with brake cleaner.

Richard Your Questions About Car Brake Pads

Richard asks…

If I bought new brake Pads online, can I take them to an auto shop to get them put on my car?

Plan on getting these particular performance brake pads for my car. I can only get them online if I take them to an auto shop will they be able to put them on and just charge a labor fee?

latitude answers:

Yes sir …they can ….simply call ahead..first get a quote without telling them you have your own brakes ..then ask them the price if you provide your own brakes ….

Good luck

Mark Your Questions About Drum Brakes

Mark asks…

How do I change out Rear drum brake on a 2000 Dodge Neon to make them disk brakes like the front.?

I have a 2000 Dodge Neon 2.0L I bought front/rear drilled and slotted rotors for. I am trying to change out the rear Drum brakes and replace it with an assembly to house calipers so I may use my matching Rotos on the back. I just got new rims and it looks very bad against the new rim.

latitude answers:

This would be an expensive and time consuming conversion.
The brake lines, maybe master cylinder, and rear brake mounts would have to be changed, go to a junk yard and get all the parts off of a vehicle

Laura Your Questions About Drum Brakes

Laura asks…

Why does my right rear drum brake click when I hit the brakes?

My right rear drum brake clicks when I apply the brakes. The clicking gradually gets slower as the car slows down. It doesn’t inhibit my ability to slow down but the clicking is annoying. What’s wrong here?

latitude answers:

I reckon you have an eccentric or out of round drum. Or perhaps a cracked one, or one where the centre and the actual drum have separated a bit. How long since the brakes were looked at? Is the wheel tight?
In an eccentric brake drum, the shoes have to slide about to follow the eccentricity. Eventually this will cause excessive wear on the side of the shoes, and grooving in the brake backplates. So often a click is what occurs as the shoes try to compensate.
Check everything out. The drum for cracking, look at it, suspend it on 1 finger and tap the outside sharply. It should produce a ringing sound if OK, but a dull “thunk” if it is cracked (or separating from its centre, if it is a 2- part drum).
Also look to see if the drum internal surface is in good condition or not. Worn steps generally means re- machining the drum, but check the maximum diameter is not (or might already have been), exceeded.

James Your Questions About Drum Brakes

James asks…

Why do some cars have discs brakes in the rear while others have drum?

Is it based on the overall weight of a vehicle because I’ve noticed that most smaller cars have drums in the rear. I happen to like drum brakes. They require less maintenance and I have never had an issue with stopping although I know that disc brakes provide better stopping power.

latitude answers:

It’s an option or standard equipment. My S10 has drum rears, but disc brakes were an option that year. A new Cadillac has standard rear disc brakes.

Your Questions About Brakes Repair Estimated Cost

Mark Your Questions About Brakes Repair Estimated Cost

Mark asks…

Likeliness of a motorcycle crash that makes repair cost nearly the cost of the bike?

I just had to put my old bike (Kawasaki Ninja valued at $2000 used) up for sale for a measly $500 as a “parts bike”. Apparently just one crash (and not even into an object, just a slip on an oil slick at about 40mph) was enough to permanently break the front shocks, headlight holder, front fairing, and gauges.

The total cost of fixing these was estimated at about $1500…and the bike’s value is about $2000 if it is fixed. I’m OK because I had full gear (just a few very minor scrapes and no broken bones), but watching the $2000 I paid for the bike just fly out the window still got quite frustrating.
—————————————————————
I’m just wondering…how common is this (to have a single crash cost almost as much as the bike to fix)?

I am getting a new bike for about $3000, but am wondering on the side of my mind: what kind of crashes would cause the same level of damage and why does it seem every other rider can just pick up their bike after a crash, drain it, and get it running again?
And, I’m also wondering on the side, do most “wet slip” crashes really cause this much damage, or it there a certain bad way to make the bike slip that causes much more damage than having it slip in other ways?
————————————————————————————–
I know now, for example, that in rainy weather you are NOT supposed to keep holding down the rear brake once it locks to avoid a high-side crash (apparently the MSF taught me that technique…which actually made things worse in wet weather). But it still make me wonder if a certain unlucky or badly-planned combination of crash factors gave my bike damage that, at least to me, seems disproportionately high for the circumstances.

latitude answers:

Answer:

Almost any crash or laydown will put a $2000 dollar bike into the scrap yard if insurance is involved.

Heck its really the same with a car of the same value.

Steven Your Questions About Brakes Repair Estimated Cost

Steven asks…

Cost to repair a broken axel?

Hello, I have a 2000 Jetta DL FWD, automatic car and I just got into an accident.
I was driving and about to go around a right-hand turn and my friend was goofing around and pulled the e-brake. The rear wheels locked up and the car started to power slide uncontrollably. The rear wheels lost traction and then I slammed into the curb with the front drivers-side wheel hitting the curb first. The car bounced up onto the curb and into some bushes. Both hubcaps flew off and there the tire frames are bent and contorted.
I am almost positive that the front drivers axel is broken, because the wheel will no longer turn accurately and makes a grinding sound when I try and drive. My ABS light is also on and the car is no longer drivable. The damage to the rear driver-side wheel is less because it hit the curb second and with less force, however I am fairly sure the rear axel is broken as well. So does any have any cost estimates or suggestions?

latitude answers:

Cost more to repair then it is worth

Sharon Your Questions About Brakes Repair Estimated Cost

Sharon asks…

What is this grinding sound when I back my car up???

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT and whenever I put it in reverse and back up, the car makes this loud deep grinding sound. This does not sound like the brakes to me, I am not pressing on the brakes when this occurs. It just happens the entire time I am backing up until I hit the brakes and then it stops. Please tell me what this could be so when I get it checked out I will have some understanding of what is going on so I don’t get ripped off. If you can give me a ball park estimate on the repair cost that would be helpful too!! Thank you!!

latitude answers:

It sounds like there might be something wrong with your transmission. It’s hard to say what the price of the repair would be without knowing whether it’s a manual or automatic transmission, but I’d recommend taking it to a reputable repair shop where you can get an estimate before they do the work.

Susan Your Questions About Brakes Repair Estimated Cost

Susan asks…

I was looking for a ball-park estimate on the cost of repairing at Chevy Malibu engine?

When the car was inspected I was told my intake manifold would need to be replaced. The water pump was begining to ‘seed.’ And I believe the brake fluid needed to be flushed. I’m in college so I’ll have to save up for the repairs. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any info. on the issue. I know now that these issues plague the Malibu.
My car is a 2001 Chevy Malibu LS. It has the 3.1 V6 engine.

latitude answers:

The est cost on these repairs should be under 600 dollars. Please call some local repair shops some will be higher than others for the same repair.Be sure to ask about the warranty for the repairs done. The brake fluid does not have to be flushed.Best of luck with your Malibu.

Mandy Your Questions About Brakes Repair Estimated Cost

Mandy asks…

Cost to repair chassis?

My brakes failed and I rear ended a Ford at around 10MPH so it was really a bump more than a crash. The only damage I saw were scratches however the mechanic they have taken it to says the chassis is bent and will need straightened.

I would really appreciate any ideas on how much this will cost. From lowest to highest estimates if possible. At such a low speed I wouldn’t expect it to be majorly damaged
I’m talking about cost to repair the Ford that was not mine. The Ford belonged to the other party. I think it was around 2005 and a Focus

latitude answers:

300 to 3000,,ask the guy whos gona do the work
sounds like 20 mph..you say bump but if you bent the front end its a wreck not a bump…get estamate IN WRITING because once it gets taken apart,,,you get taken to the cleaners …get it!

Paul Your Questions About How To Work On Brakes

Paul asks…

How do I fix broken blinkers?

I have a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass cruiser. My blinkers have been working sporadically for the past few months. When I turn them on, they didn’t blink at constant intervals but instead kinda flickered. Well now they aren’t working. It’s not a problem with the fuse because other things going to that exact fuse are still working (brake light, license plate light etc). How do I fix this?

latitude answers:

There is a specific “flasher” fuse. It’s much larger then the actual fuses, it should look like a tiny box with outlet style prongs that connect it to the fuse box. Try replacing those. They’re really cheap. Also, it could be one of your signal lights is burned out, this would cause the blinkers to “flicker”.

Donna Your Questions About Replace Brake Parts

Donna asks…

replacing brake line on my jeep grand cherokee. the new line doesnt seem to be able to thread into the fittin?

the new brake line will not thread into the fitting in the rear of my jeep. it seems just a hair to big. i went to the parts store, they said there is nothing else close and that should work. are my threads wrong or maybe just messed up. help.

latitude answers:

I had a similar problem on the front axle of my ’90 ranger. It turned out that the flare on the end of the brake line was wrong. I had a bubble flare and it needed to be a double flare. The bubble flare looks like a bubble on the end of the line while the double flare is flatter. If you still have your old line compare the ends to be sure they are the same.

Ken Your Questions About Replace Brake Parts

Ken asks…

How much is it going to cost to get brake lines fixed?

My 1997 Chevy Blazer needs all the brake lines replaced (the salt they put on the roads in winter ruins then fast here in New England) Just wondering how much I can expect to pay (parts and labor) for all the brakes lines
Please note, yes they ALL need replaced…ALL OF THEM!!! Please no “who told you that they all need replaced”comments because clearly whoever is writing those has not been in a New England winter and seen the damage the salt they put on the roads does….they are ALL rusty and i need them ALL replaced….just wanted to know an estimate…

latitude answers:

Don’t know why you need them all replaced. Who convinced you of that. Why don’t you have the worst replaced, a little at a time. Replacing them will cost as much or more than your truck is worth, believe me. You’ve picked one of the toughest jobs on a truck.

Emergency Brake Repair on 1996 Saturn SL1 – Advice, please?

My emerg. Brake is not holding the car well. I had it tightened, but I noticed that when parking on hills that brake doesn’t “grab” or “hold the car” as well as it used to. I turn in the wheels for safety. Is it time to replace the emergency brake? Or only parts of the emergency brake? What does that involve? Average cost?

latitude answers:

If adjusting the brake isint enough, your brake cable might actually be stretched out, its doubtfull the pads are worn down but have them looked at anyways, have the cable and linkage inspected for replacement

Lisa Your Questions About Replace Brake Parts

Lisa asks…

What is the typical cost of fixing brake calipers on a car?

My mechanic is charging $800 for replacing both front wheel brake caliper mechs. Labor and parts. Is this reasonable?
2001 Honda Civic

latitude answers:

That sounds way too high to me considering the cost of the 2 calipers shouldn’t be more than $100. At the most and new pads and the brake job usually cost about $80 at Midas, I would run from that mechanic.

I have an 89 Honda Accord LX 4dr and the brakes keep locking up, Is there a sensor to replace?

I have already replaced booster, calipers & master cylinders
I have already replaced booster, calipers & master cylinders.

latitude answers:

Is it the rear brakes that seem to be locking up? Does it only lock up when you step on the brakes or all the time?

If it only locks up when you step on the brakes, ant it appears to be the rear wheels locking up, it sounds like the brake proporting valve is going/gone bad.

This valve is usually against the firewall and there is one input from the brake master cylinder and 4 outputs one for each wheel.

If you think it’s the brake proporting valve and need further info/pics, e-mail me.

Nancy Your Questions About Replace Brakes Honda Accord

Nancy asks…

How do you replace the brake lamp on a 1999 honda accord?

I left brake lamp just went out on my 99 accord and I was wondering how to replace it myself so I don’t have to take it in and be charged for it.

latitude answers:

The bulb access is right behind the trunk liner carefully remove the plastic tab on that side near the trunk opening and pull back the trunk liner and this will give you access to the back side of the light, the bulb holders are like a 1/4 to take them out. The bulb type is a wedge bulb which is a simple pull out and then push back in. Carefully replace the trunk liner, the gasket around the trunk opening should go over the edge of the trunk liner use other side as an example.
Do it once and you will get the hang of it, its pretty easy.
Good luck!

1st check whether is there any leaks on ur master cylinder pump, pipings n brake hose. There might b internal leaking inside ur master pump.

U may consider replacing ur rubber brake hoses w/ steel braided type coz ur brake hoses which is made of rubber might have expanded due to wear n tear over time.

Mandy Your Questions About Replace Brakes Honda Accord

Mandy asks…

When to get brakes checked/replaced on new Honda Accord?

and do you go to the dealer?

latitude answers:

Depending on the type and style of driving you do, the original factory brakes on a new Honda should last for at least 40-60K Miles. If they’re wearing out faster than that, then there’s something else wrong with the car that should be checked out.

It’s a fairly simple job to replace brake pads and shoes, and most any place that does car repairs can do a brake job for you.

Your Questions About How Do I Service My Furnace

Carol Your Questions About How Do I Service My Furnace

Carol asks…

Furnace/Central Air Questions/Please Help?

I was wondering how much it would cost to have someone come out and service my furnace. Our house is 22 years old, and we have never replace the system(but we have had some service/maintenance. Our fan continues to run after the system has shut off when the control panel is on auto. I worry the motor may fizzle out if we do not find the problem. We also have a problem with the clear tube filling up with water in the winter, therefore we have to empty it before the heat will come on; and sometimes this happens when we are sleeping—it can get very cold before we realize what is going on. If we have to replace this furnace how much am I looking at cost wise?

Also I have a friend at work who has a friend who does this kind of work, and says I could call him up to help with the costs. I don’t even know him.Should I trust this guy? My friend said his mom had some work done and it didn’t cost as much as what it would have if she called one of the common companies.

Thanks ahead of time for any and all suggestions!

latitude answers:

1 -Inside fan staying running: sticking fan relay.

#2 -Don’t really know what you are talking about some crazy clear tube that apparently keeps the furnace from running; there is no known system-dependent switching mechanism

#3 -If the friend of your friend has the proper training, tools & skills and knows his backside from 3rd base then yes, you can trust him to save you some money but don’t expect him to work for free….

#4 -To get a complete estimate you will have to get a licensed contractor for a major job such as this. Warning:it ain’t gonna be cheap. If the HVAC outfit gets the feeling you are going to use outside labor to put a hole in their pocket they may bow up on you so be ready.

Sandra Your Questions About How Do I Service My Furnace

Sandra asks…

HELP!! Tenants are absolutely insane – called the police? ?

Hi everyone,
I posted a while ago about how my parents have insane tenants. Recently we had a family emergency that my parents had to tend to the past few weeks. Last week we got a letter stating that the tenant wanted to have the furnace serviced – we brought a guy in to service it, he said it wasn’t up to code, and so he shut the system down yesterday. We called several places last night, a few came in today to give us estimates on replacing it and we are planning on having it replaced tomorrow morning. When we got home we had a voicemail from an “enforcement officer” from our bureau calling in regards to the house??? This lady is constantly sending us demanding letters, screaming at us on the phone and we are trying our best to get this fixed. It will be fixed by tomorrow – what should we do? We tried to call back but they had already left. I don’t know what this is in regards to but there was nothing else we could have done but replace it!
They have been really demanding and uncooperative from day 1 – I understand that it needs to be replaced, and we will do so..but why call the police??
I mean I totally understand that they need heat and that is why we have been working as quickly as possible!! We also already told her we agreed to fix it asap.
She is just so problematic and we signed a three year lease with her!! She was previously in the real estate industry so it seems she knows every way humanly possible to give us a hard time.
What are some legitimate grounds for eviction??
By the way, from the moment she moved in, she has been sending us letters complaining about one thing or another. Whether it was the grout in the bathroom to the windows (which we replaced ALL of) to apparently the recent bugs (which we never have had a problem with in that house).
If she goes to a hotel tonight, what is our obligation in terms of paying?
We sent her a long three page letter certified on Saturday and she hasn’t signed for it – if she is purposely not reading the letter, what does that mean in terms of the contents of it?

latitude answers:

It will work out quite nicely that you weren’t able to speak to the enforcement officer until tomorrow. Just say “We are aware of the problem and there is a company scheduled to arrive at (time) today to replace the furnace. Is there anything else I can help you with?”

As far as the tenants who scream about everything. All you can do is know your rights. Let them complain about stuff that they don’t have the right to complain about. If their complaints aren’t valid, they will fall on deaf ears at the code enforcement department. When you talk to the tenant on the phone, be reasonable, firm, and above all calm. If they get out of control, just hang up on them. Tell them that you are willing to work with them if they are having problems, but until they can act like adults and have a reasonable conversation without getting upset and yelling, you aren’t going to talk to them. I would ask the tenants for a written list of all of their concerns. Ask them to make the list clear and concise and tell them that once you receive their list, you will review it and take action. If they refuse, then tell them you are trying to be reasonable, and until they can do the same for you, you can’t help them.

Also, review the written lease. Look for any technicality that would allow your parents to evict them. If you don’t have a written lease, then you technically have a verbal month-to-month contract and you can simply give them a written notice 30 days in advance that you are kicking them out, no reason required. I would send it via certified mail so you have a reciept to prove that they got it.

Nancy Your Questions About How Do I Service My Furnace

Nancy asks…

How do I determine if I have a correct furnace for my mobilehome?

We bought a 1979 triple wide Lancer almost a year ago. We had a warranty service call because the heat and air doesn’t blow in my daughter’s room. The service tech says the furnace we have is out of code, in his words “illegal”, and because of that the warranty company will not cover the duct repair. How do I find out if this guy knows what he is talking about. He says only a Coleman is in spec. I have limited paperwork from the previous owners but I know the original furnace was a Coleman.
The ductwork is in the ceiling, and I don’t want to have to tear the ceiling out and replace it if I don’t have to.

latitude answers:

Typical warranty company finding an easy way out…..just go under the trailer and fix the duct yourself. It’s probably a flexible duct that has just come loose from the vent….you need to fix it soon because otherwise you will be blowing your conditioned air underneath your trailer instead of in your home.

Your Questions About Brake Repair Cost

Laura Your Questions About Brake Repair Cost

Laura asks…

Flex brake line repair cost?

My fiance has a 1999 pontiac bonneville and today the brake line busted and he lost fluid, had to be towed, etc. The repair shop said they would have to get back to us tomorrow, but we’re trying to plan a trip and could really use a cost estimate tonight. From what we understand, it’s 2 of the soft brake lines and it was corroded where it met a metal piece. Clearly I know nothing about cars, but if anyone can figure out what on earth I’m talking about and let us know roughly how much we’re looking at, that would be wonderful. Thank you!

latitude answers:

The flex lines usually cost about $25 each if you buy them. At a repair shop expect to pay double. One hour labor should replace both.

Lisa Your Questions About Brake Repair Cost

Lisa asks…

How much will it cost to repair my front brake pads and rotors? 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?

I bought the brake pads and rotors. How much can I expect labor to be?

latitude answers:

No need to replace rotors unless damaged due to completely worn down pads to the metal or if they are warped

75 to 100 at the very most to have them replaced

Sandra Your Questions About Brake Repair Cost

Sandra asks…

Anyone know the average cost of brake repair on a 97 Doge Neon?

I recently bought a ’97 Dodge Neon. Before I bought it I took it to Meineke to have a complete diagnostics test. According to the mechanic everything was fine, except for a few minor repairs such as the brakes. On the inspection form the break repair section is checked, specifically visual inspect of left, right, and rear rotor drum thickness. Anyone might know how much this can costs me? I hate to take it to a brake shop, have them charge me 50.00 to inspect it, then tell me it’s going to cost 300.
Thanks

latitude answers:

If its only the rear brake shoes and the front brake pads the cost is $200 label +parts.if u install new rear drums rotors + brake shoes + front disc rotors + front brake pads=about $500.00
its weird that u have to replace disc rotors and drums rotors that happened if the last owner ran the car for a long period without brake pads.

William Your Questions About Brake Repair Cost

William asks…

How much it cost to repair the front brake hoses on a 1995 Cadillac DeVille? Is it hard to do-it-yourself?

latitude answers:

I replaced hundreds of these in my old career and I didn’t find it to be a difficult job if all went well. The cost to replace the hoses with parts and labour was usually around 150-200 bucks. The labour was usually around 1.2-1.5 hours, so go from there. I will say that if you are not comfortable doing mechanical things, brakes are not the learning ground for you to do this. There is always a chance of breaking something in here as these parts are not exactly the strongest. There is also a lot of other expensive components around this area. You have to have a sure hand and be sure things are put together properly so as to avoid a catastrophic failure. You have to route the new ones in and bleed the brakes properly as all these have ABS which makes bleeding a lot more troublesome. I do advise you to take it in to a dealer!

Jenny Your Questions About Brake Repair Cost

Jenny asks…

How much would it cost to repair a glass cover on a brake light?

Hi, I’m 16 and one of my tail light and brake lights glass coverings is broken on my Subaru car. I don’t know how the glass was smashed, no other part of my car seems damaged, just that one glass casing. The lights that it covers both still work. How much would it cost to get that glass casing replaced? I don’t know much about cars and I’m sorry about the lack of information, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

latitude answers:

Those tail light lenses are shockingly expensive new, normally between $100 and $200, because the whole light assembly comes as one unit. Some searching on the internet will cut that about in half, maybe better. Wrecking yards are often better priced, but the first source, which pulls together the inventory of some but not all wrecking yards, lists tail lights for a 2000 Forester (for example) at about $90-$100. A pull-it-yourself yard would be cheaper but you would want to ask “how much” before searching the yard. Body parts can be frustrating to find because they change so often. The actual replacement is an easy DIY.

Car parts stores often carry crude but effective repair kits that put a red plastic film over the smashed part. The repair looks pretty red-neck but at least it keeps the tail and brake lights red, which is a legal requirement. Cheap, too.
