Richard asks…
How do I bleed the brakes on my mountain bike?
I have a Hayes hydraulic disc brake set which had a leak, which I fixed. I now need to know how to top up with DOT3 fluid and get the air out. It is a Hayes Nine lever.

Bleeding a hydraulic brake system is actually very easy once you get the hang of it (and Hayes are among the easiest of all, in my experience) – but there’s a definite knack to it, so you might want to see if you can find anyone a bit more experienced to help you out the first time. It’s a relatively involved process, so rather than write down the full instructions here I’ve found you a handy link: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=138
It’ll be even easy if you get yourself a proper Hayes bleeding kit, too: http://www.hayesdiscbrake.com/brakes/parts-accessories/bleed-kit/pro-bleed-kit/
Have fun – and remember not to drip dot4 on your mum’s carpet, because it’ll burn a hole straight through and she’ll be furious.

Use rubbing alcohol to clean the disc and pads use a little sand paper to take the glaze off the pads

Sharon asks…
One of the brakes on my bike has broke?
So yeah, I was riding in the park, and then I done a sudden stop, then I wanted to do a stop again, but I noticed only one was working, because the brake on the right hand side, came all the way back to the brake handle, so how do I fix this?
Many Thanks
latitude answers:
What kind of brakes do you have? It sounds like the cable released from the brake. Use an allen key to reconnect the cable to its post on the brake. Make sure it’s attached securely so you don’t run into this problem again.

Mary asks…
is my sister being unreasonable?
sorry i need to vent.
okay, so I have a bmx bike that has been custom built to my specs for the past 10 years, along with the very high personal value, its worth is about $1500… well I need it to commute to school which has had very high bike theft rates lately. I currently use a cheap bike lock and am indoors while my bike is locked up outside well into the night and right now dont have money for a new strong Ulock which im trying to find one for cheap.
my sister moved out of the city back home where she never uses the bike except maybe once a week for a ride around the nieghborhood where its safe and unlocked in the backyard
I had been using her bike this summer and she said i could use her lock if i fixed the problems i cuased to the bike.
1. i raised the seat – my dad lowered it before i could
2. the gearing was making funny noises – I went to go find out what was wrong with it and it was just the noise it had always made
well i live about 65 miles from home and cant afford to drive home just to grab a few things, and since my sister is visiting a friend out here i asked her to bring the stuff. I called her and asked her to bring the lock
“can i also borrow your U-lock”
“i said you could if you fixed my bike”
“I did fix it, and the gearing has always been like that”
“yeah but you didnt fix the brakes”
— im a pro at working on brakes so if she wouldve told me to fix the brakes i woulda done it no problem when i went to fix the gears
“you never told me to fix the brakes”
-she hangs up on me
i call her back and shes like “i cant tlak im driving” and hangs up on me… even though she makes calls while driving all the time
then i call home and say patty didnt get all the other stuff on the list i needed. i then lie and say i have meds at home i need. my parents call her and she comes back since she realizes this is something thats important. <— yeah i know, im notperfect either
when she goes back home i get my parents to throw some other shit i need in the car. at the same time i try texting my other sister who is currently crippled to use her bikelock, but she had the key and before i ccould get my jerk sister to use crippled sisters lock while i juse jerk sisters lock, she leaves.
I understand she was in a rush to go see her friend, but why couldnt she spare an extra 5 minutes, i mean if it was that important, wouldnt sshe have left much earlier, and also how big of a difference does 5 minutes make in a 70 mile drive?
ugggh im soo pissed
should i be nice when she brings me the stuff and then throw a cup of water at her crotch as shes leaving?(wont stain but will embaress her, teehee)… especially when she KNOWS hanging up on me is one of the things that super super super pisses me off

How do I find out history on old Fuji bike bought at auction?
My husband bought on older bike from a farm auction to fix up for me and I wondered if there was any ino to be found about it and where? It’s a green 20″ single speed bike with handlebar brakes. Says Nichibei Fuji Cycle Company LTD on the frame and then has a sticker says TOBU, not sure if this sticker is org or not because it has kids kellogs tony the tiger stickers on it too. The green is org color but is rusted off the chain guard. I didnt see any numbers on it but will do closer inspection today. Also has metal flat rack behind seat for?
Thanks for any help!

Wow, that is an old one. Unfortunately the Fuji name has been bought and sold a couple of times since that bike was built.
Your bike was built about 1967 or 1968 at the beginning of the “Asian Attack” on the bike industry. It is even possible that it was brought back to the U.S. By a Korean War veteran.
The biggest issue you are going to have is finding any kind of parts for it other than cables and tires, and maybe wheels.. Most early Fuji models used a type of threading called Whitworth which was borrowed from the British and is long since obsolete.
Cool piece of esoterica though.
